Music Videos

From working with ARIA winning artists Baker Boy & GFlip, garnering a nomination at the 2022 NIMA’s- to collaborating locally with underground musicians, all share the same goal… connect the artist with the audience.

With Covid restricting movement between borders, I was brought in as D.P. for “My Mind”.  Director Jamison Kerr was isolated in Sydney & so it was up to us to relay the live feed out of the Arri Mini LF, to his viewfinder 1,000km away.

…below, a small collection of older music videos filmed in Melbourne. Following the energetically shifting Sol’ Manic in his two polarising tracks, Rockstar BoLa wanting the most ‘music video’ music video & Bailey Jaxxon caught in a cold case trying to uncover his partners “Calculated Lies”.

Above is the unreleased video shot for Melbourne based artist & friend Olive Amun. Shot in an evening with just myself Olive & his partner we had a great time attempting to make something out of nothing…

My experience within the music video scene was not limited to DP, and was able to learn many other departments on larger sets.

These opportunities  enable me to engage with industry leading tech and grow my network with more experienced and knowledgeable mentors. Many professional sets that I operated on I was first or second AC, pulling focus and swinging lenses, to this day I very much still enjoy these roles, so much so that I bought my own Nucleus-M system.

For quite some time I was freelancing as a BTS videographer on sets around Melbourne. Notably my favourite experiences being Baker Boy’s Ride (dir. by Ryan Sauer) & Lakyn - Good Can Come From The Garden (dir. by Gianna Mazzeo). Working with such incredible and inspirational talent exposed me to world class lighting techniques and compositions, being a sponge on every set.

Employing these techniques into my own creative process, soon my clients were commenting on the dimension and richness in tone and framing that I had provided. I worked with Melbourne artist Sol’Manic for many years, developing the quality of our collaborations with every film clip. Working closely with more artists like Hugo Bladel, Bailey Jaxxon, Rockstar BoLA and Olive Amun curated a highly diverse timbre of music for my film making to cater to.

Running Away by Sol’Manic was a highlight for me. We spontaneously went out into the night and with three 4’ RGB Nanlite tubes and one 1’ tube, lit up a phone booth outside his local news agency. Counter to the introspective brooding tone and aesthetic of Running Away, GNUMB, also for artist Sol’Manic, was a chaotic and vibrant affair. Directed by close friend Bailey Jackson, we ‘wet-down’ the scene, which was shot inside a warehouse, setting up exaggerated backlights, with a couple of soft fill lights coming in from the front. We went with a strong warm tone in the first scene and then when the camera switched to the ‘aerial’ perspective, we went with a rich blue and eventually to UV and strobe. This dynamic shift in lighting was so enjoyable to plan out & its execution left me in awe of large scale DMX setups.

After some time honing my craft, I was called in to DP the music video My Mind for Baker Boy ft. G Flip. Director Jamieson Kerr was scheduled to shoot the music video, but due to Covid lockdowns, he was stuck in Sydney. This was a great opportunity to bring together all my worked experience in the live, film and music video scenes and my colleague Adrian Newman and I headed out to the south west coast of Victoria to shoot the clip.
